Tech Edge- Mobile Learning In the classroom
This week we had the opportunity to choose one of 200 Tech Edge podcast to review from Dr. Guy Trainin. He has published several research articles, books and maintains an extensive digital authorship. Which include 200 videos and more than 200 blog post! Tech Edge is a partnership between Nebraska school districts and teacher education programs at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. This partnership aims to create a generation of teachers who are effective and confident in their abilities to use modern technology. By instilling confidence in our teachers, they are able to bridge the gap from the old generation to the modern 21st century of students that enter the classrooms today.
I Chose the Tech Edge- Mobile learning in the classroom- History APPs podcast. Dr. Guy Trainin gives really good resources and digital tools that are really useful in 6-12 grade classroom. With that being said, I found this podcast to be especially helpful since it was geared to history a subject matter that contains a ton of information. His resources helped bridge the gap between overflowing your students' heads with knowledge that would go in one ear and out the other. Hence, by Dr. Trainin presenting resources that have the right amount of information that will not just stick in their brains, but also have your students wanting to explore history on a deeper level than every BEFORE! Some of the fun apps that Dr. Traiain shared in this podcast were, World History Atlas HD with 3D, Crash Course and lastly, Smart History from Khan Academy. |
TECH EDGE-MOBIE LEARNING -HISTORY APP EPISODE 10
|
The first app I explored was called World Atlas HD with 3D. This app is an amazing resource, especially for middle school and high school aged teachers and students. It allows teachers and students the ability to explore different parts of the world in one place, it also allows students and teachers the ability to explore different time eras and see how technology or resources impacted c certain countries and the world in general. Another useful tool this app offers is, is a route tool . This allows your students to quickly move to another part of the world, this tool is a very useful in terms of comparing and contrasting other countries. Despite many amazing pros this app has one negative con that which is the price, the price is 4.99. Nonetheless, this app supports many different learners and contains information that is present in a way that will draw students and have them wanting to explore history on a deeper level! With that being said, the purpose of this app is to allow students to visually see how the world has changed, and what contributing factors have impacted the world. To wrap up, a teacher can use this app in their classroom when they are either going over two different countries and want to compare them, or when the class is doing individual projects on certain countries and need a QUCIK and EASY resource. This app has it all! I would recommend any teacher to spend the 5 dollars to allow minds to be opened and engaged! Click on the link below for more info on the app and more reviews!

The second app I explored, was Crash Course! Unlike the world atlas app which was a bit pricy this app is totally FREE! This app contains numerous of relative videos that are relative to your content an subject matter! However, it is not a video that can be used in place of a lesson. It offers quick and easy introductions or summary of a specific issue or issues that are related to your specific lesson you are going over. It offers world and U.S history videos, among many different topics! It is available very easily through either PBS or you can find it on your app store titled nerdfighteria : Crash Course. To wrap up, the purpose of this app is to quickly engage your students in a topic or lesson before diving deeper into the lesson, in my opinion, this is a great hook device that many teachers should use especially in a history class. This app can be used mostly for secondary level grades which are 6-12 grade. With that being said, I don't see any cons to this app which leads into this app is definitely a good and useful app for learning because it engages your students before the lesson even starts and it will have them sitting on the edge of their seats! The last app I explored was titled Khan Academy. This app was also FREE, it also offered many different resources that are available to not just history teachers but other teachers as well! This app also offers a different sets of videos, and how it has attacks history in a new and fun way. For instance, it is slower and it has more designs featured in the videos. that are aimed at highlighting key features and talking about key points in that specific video you have chosen. Khan has done this in math before, so he is doing it in history form. With that being said, Khan is less historian and more as a content orientated expert, and even less issue orientated. Despite, this he is able to put more detail in his videos. Which allows for a more pleasing graphically photos and makes it more interesting for students. However, even though this app is a crash course and can be very beneficial. It does add some negative aspect as well, for instance, if you ARE NOT comfortable with crash course or fast pace and very detailed orientated., and a very different BIG picture of history. Then this app is not for you! With that being said, I would have to say this app is more aimed for high school students and grade levels. I would also say this would be useful more likely in a more detailed oriented history class such as world history and beyond. The purpose of this video is to allow students to see history in a more content based style rather than subject based model. To wrap up, this app is a very useful app that can bridge the gap from the subject manner to content matter that you are teaching, it allows students to see more of a graphical approach to history rather than fact based videos.
