Take aways from this lesson and author!
As a future social studies teacher I understand certain topics may very broad topics, fun and engaging and simply down right boring! However, Mr. Kathmans One Best thing on Lewis Hein was a practical engaging lesson that allows students to understand a broad topic in a narrow setting. Mr. Kathman accomplishes this task in having his student analyze Lewis Hein industrialization era photographies. Mr. Kathman used a variety of different resources that allowed his students to gain better and deeper understanding to Lewis work and why he took those photos and how it relates to history. Mr. Kathman used the library of congress website. This particular website made it easier for him and his students to see Lewis photos in a well organized way. For instance. the library of congress utilized the app/website flicker to better organize Lewis Hein work in different categories.
Once Mr. Kathmans students showed some understanding about anazyleing photos and why Lewis photos were so important in particualr to how he photograph the images the way he did. He had his students take control over their learning and brainstorm problems within their community. He emphasized to his students that they were to think like Lewis Hein in the process of brainstorming problems. Once the students have finished brainstorming they then were able to create a photograph and explain why they chose it and how it related to the lesson. A cool app that Mr. Kathman had his student used during this process was called snapseed. Snapped is a fantastic, free photo editing app that is easy to use, very intuitive and provides students with lots of options.
From Mr. Kathman's lesson I learned that the library of congress has many different resources that teaches and students can uses. It has graphic organized that teaches students how to observe, reflect, and questions photographs and prints. It also gives students examples of how to identify questions for further investigations! Another cool thing I learned from his lesson is the app called snapseed, this simple app allows students to access to edit photos in a free and safe way! This appealed to myself especially because with technology becoming a huge thing in classroom's it is important to find free and safe places for student to express their creative skills! With that being said, I will be using snapseed in my classroom in the future! I will also be using the library of congress as a free and fun resource for lesson and actives for my future students!
Below I have listed the links to Mr. Kathmans One Best think iBook, the library of congress main page and other sub-pages that allow you to explore the different tools and links it offers, flicker, and lastly snapseed! All of these resources are free and are appropriate for middle school aged kids through high-school! I have also posted photos of each link, website, and app!
